Multipurpose smoothie - stops me eating an obscene amount of gelato & boosts energy!

I’m getting ready to move house at the moment and it’s reached the point where it feels pretty hectic trying to sort through 1001 tasks to make everything go smoothly whilst packing up/sorting through all my belongings too. There is so much to do and at some point through the day my energy levels totally drop and I need a fast “pick me up” to recharge my batteries whilst surveying the chaotic scenes of unending, half loaded, brown, cardboard boxes all around me.

I’ve already mentioned in other posts that I am unlikely to write out (m)any “proper” recipes here — mostly because I have the attention span of a kitten and am also super lazy. Instead, I will share food/drink ideas which, despite involving minimal effort & minimal precision, will still result in maximum yumminess. As my style mainly involves hurling all the ingredients into a pot, pan, bowl or blender at once, I call these things “jumbles” rather than recipes. Don't be fooled into thinking that fast meals/drinks need to lack the love though . . . they can be just as full of love and positivity as something that takes up hours of kitchen time.

This is one of my “go-to” things to whizz up when I am craving something sweet and am desperately trying to swerve the urge to fall face first into a bowl of gelato. The frozen banana gives it the texture of a milkshake and, of course, is naturally sweet - so you get the energy boost. lt also hits the “Yummy” button very easily and keeps the “HM” (Hangry Monster) away. Just be aware that if you use some/all of the “optional extras”, it is pretty filling (and can be calorific with all the add-ins) and in that case, I tend to have it for breakfast when I am in a rush. You just need a blender/stick blender to whizz it up with.

Jumble This:

The basics

  • Frozen banana - 1 small banana per person. You can use any frozen fruit but banana (or even just some banana) adds a delicious creaminess. I nearly always have frozen fruit in my freezer so I can whizz something like this up quickly if I need to.

  • Fresh or frozen, uncooked spinach - a handful (or frozen equivalent) per person.

  • (Organic) Milk or any unsweetened, natural milk alternative - as much as needed for however thick/thin you want it.

  • Oats (uncooked) - approx 1 tablespoon per person.

  • Ground flaxseeds - approx 1 tablespoon per person.

  • A nice pinch of cinnamon.

  • The love - well of course this needs to go in . . .a combination of mostly healthy ingredients is a type of love anyway but why not also take the few moments that this recipe takes to add in a gentle, kind thought or wish for yourself?

Optional Add Ins

  • If you need it sweeter - a couple of dried dates or a little good honey or coconut sugar - they all have a slightly caramel taste to them which is delicious with banana. Try it first without adding any of these things in it, as the banana really can be very naturally sweet.

  • If you need an extra kick - throw in a shot of black coffee or shot of matcha.

  • Protein Powder - an unsweetened one, without ingredients that look like they came straight from a lab.

  • Nut butter - around 1 tablespoon - I love deep roast peanut butter.

  • Vanilla extract - just a half teaspoon.

  • Unsweetened cocoa powder/cacao - I nearly always add this...after all, banana and chocolate are an eternal love story.

Method:

Other than the milk, all the other things in the ingredients list above need to become drinkable. I know that you already know this. I know that you already know that this can only happen by putting everything into the blender and whizzing until nice and smooth. You don’t need any instructions from me here. Just make it, drink it, enjoy it and smile.
